Coaching

Trends and benefits

Coaching is an increasingly popular approach to developing people — 79% of respondents to the CIPD's recent Learning & Development survey report using coaching. Coaching is also now seen as a key management skill, so many organisations now incorporate coaching training into their management development programmes.

Whether it is one-to-one or with a group, coaching is a collaborative approach to improving performance. Working in a positive and focused way with a coach enables people to reflect on and evaluate what they do, how they do it and what they want to achieve. Something that we should all do, but sometimes find difficult to achieve while doing the day job.

One-to-one coaching

It is not just our view. Our own clients tell us that coaching has enabled them to clarify their goals and direction and track their development over time and in different situations. Many value the opportunity to step back and look at the bigger picture in structured way.

One-to-one coaching has a number of benefits: increased self-awareness, confidence and emotional intelligence; all key factors in helping people to advance their careers, resolve problems and succeed in business.

Coaching works best when the person wants to work on specific goals or situations, such as settling into a new role, getting out of a rut and moving forward, making positive changes and solving problems raised in 360-degree feedback from colleagues, managers and clients.

Group coaching

Group coaching is especially effective with teams, whether it is managers and direct reports, or peer teams such as a board or management team.

Working with live problems affecting the team, coaching can provide fresh insight into the interaction of the different personalities in a team and inspire a more productive and enjoyable way of working.

Coaching throughout the company

Many organisations are incorporating training into their personal development plans, making coaching available more widely than was possible previously. Using a combination of external coaches and trained internal coaches is an effective way to develop talent and adapt to change.

Quotes from coaching clients

How often do you ask yourself, why am I doing what I am doing? Am I happy doing what I am doing?

Dawn helps you take a step back from the day to day grind to identify some of the bigger issues as to why you are where you are. Having looked at some of the bigger areas of your life, you’re able to put together practical steps to achieving exactly what you want, whether it’s work related or not.

Working with Dawn allowed time to reflect on what had gone before, and how to meet the challenges ahead. By stealth, she got me to reveal more about myself than I’d cared to consider or deal with, and understand more what I was capable of.

Often difficult and never anything but insightful, it was a hugely rewarding process, the benefits of which have positive effects on a professional and personal level.
